Project Title: Intelligent Optimisation on a Smartphone for Cinema Worker Scheduling Student: Aidan Sabin Course: BSc Hons Computer Science Abstract: Workforce scheduling is a complex process that can have drastic consequences for costs, employee satisfaction, and operational efficiency. Advancements in optimisation techniques and computational power have led to automatic workforce scheduling solutions that are tailor made for the industries they serve. This is true for industries as diverse as nursing, retail, and manufacturing. This project proposes the application of automatic workforce scheduling for cinemas – a unique problem domain that has previously received little attention when designing such scheduling solutions. Furthermore, existing solutions leverage expensive cloud-computing solutions and typically require the user to be at their desktop. This project leverages the power of the user’s smartphone to perform optimisations with a tailor-made SA metaheuristic, hosted within an Android application that provides cinema managers with a scheduling tool they can use to quickly generate efficient employee schedules without being confided to their office.
